General Restrictions


  • No use of unauthorized weaponry or ammunition while hunting within Alabama.
  • Compliance with inspections of hunting gear by Conservation Officers is mandatory.
  • The use of laser sights and forward-projecting lights is prohibited unless:
  • Holding a valid nighttime hunting license for feral swine and coyote.
  • The individual is a legally blind hunter, following regulation 220-2-.11.
  • Owning night vision equipment during hunts is illegal, exempting those with a nighttime license specifically for feral swine and coyote.
  • Fully automatic firearms are banned in hunting activities.

 

Authorized Hunting Equipment for Specific Game

Deer


  • Centerfire, mushrooming ammo in rifles.
  • Pre-charged pneumatic air guns, .30 cal or larger.
  • Pneumatic arrow rifles with broadhead arrows, 7/8 inch minimum cutting diameter, and 2 edges.
  • Shotguns of 10 gauge or less using buckshot, slugs, or single round ball.
  • Muzzleloaders and Black Powder Handguns of .40 caliber or more.
  • Long bows, compound bows, and crossbows (subject to 220-2-.03).
  • Handguns or pistols with centerfire, mushrooming ammo.

 

Turkey


  • Shotguns up to 10 gauge using standard No. 2 or smaller shot.
  • Long bows, compound bows, and crossbows (per 220-2-.03).
  • Possession of non-prohibited firearms is acceptable when stalk hunting deer and turkey, provided turkeys are not targeted with rifles or shotgun using buckshot or slugs.

 

Migratory Birds


  • Shotguns up to 10 gauge, with a filler limiting capacity to 3 shells.
  • Approved shot compositions and sizes by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
  • Long bows, compound bows, and crossbows.

 

Raccoon & Opossum


  • Nighttime: Shotguns with No. 6 shot or smaller; .22 caliber rimfire.
  • Daytime: Refer to Other Game Birds Or Animals guidelines.

 

Bobcat, Groundhog, Unprotected Wildlife, Fox, Coyote & Feral Swine


  • Rifles of any caliber.
  • Handguns or pistols.
  • Shotguns up to 10 gauge.
  • Pre-charged pneumatic air guns, .25 caliber or larger.
  • Long bows, compound bows, and crossbows.
  • Muzzleloaders and black powder handguns of any caliber.
  • Pneumatic arrow rifles with broadhead arrows (7/8 inch minimum).
  • Spears or sharpened blades.

 

Bullfrog and Pig Frog

  • Air rifles .25 caliber or smaller.
  • Gig or spear.
  • Long bows, compound bows, or crossbows.
  • Hand or dip net.

 

Other Game Birds or Animals

  • Rimfire or air-operated rifles.
  • Muzzleloaders and black powder handguns of any caliber.
  • Long bows, compound bows, and crossbows.
  • Shotguns up to 10 gauge with No. 4 shot or smaller.
  • Handguns or pistols.
  • Blowguns (breath-propelled darts).
  • Sling shots.
