Seasons and Bag / Possession Limits by Zone

AREA SPECIES SEASONS DAILY BAG & POSSESSION LIMITS
Statewide Coots & Moorhens Concurrent w/duck season
  • The daily bag limit is set at 25.
  • The possession limit is three times the daily bag limit, which amounts to 75.
Northeastern Zone Ducks Oct 7 – Jan 17
  • Daily bag limit is 7 waterfowl, with species restrictions as follows:

    • Up to 7 mallards, but no more than 2 females.
    • 1 pintail.
    • 2 canvasback.
    • 2 redheads.
    • 2 scaup.
  • The possession limit is three times the daily bag limit.

Canada Geese:
Oct 7 – Jan 14

    • Maximum of 20 white geese.

Southern San Joaquin Valley Zone Ducks Oct 21 – Jan 31
  • Daily bag limit: 7 birds, subject to species-specific maximums:

    • Mallards: 7 total, with no more than 2 being females.
    • Pintail: 1 bird.
    • Canvasback: 2 birds.
    • Redheads: 2 birds.
    • Scaup: 2 birds.
  • Possession limit is set at three times the daily bag limit.

  • Daily bag limit for geese: 30, with the following composition allowance:

    • Up to 20 white geese.
    • Up to 10 dark geese.
  • The possession limit for geese is three times the daily bag limit.

Southern California Zone Ducks Oct 21 – Jan 31
  • Daily bag limit: 7 birds with species composition limits:

    • Mallards: Maximum of 7, with up to 2 females.
    • Pintail: Maximum of 1.
    • Canvasback: Maximum of 2.
    • Redheads: Maximum of 2.
    • Scaup: Maximum of 2.
  • Possession limit: Triple the daily bag limit.

    • Mallards: Maximum of 7, including no more than 2 females or Mexican ducks.
    • Pintail: Maximum of 1.
    • Canvasback: Maximum of 2.
    • Redheads: Maximum of 2.
    • Scaup: Maximum of 2.
  • Possession limit is three times the daily bag limit.

Scaup Nov 7 – Jan 31

  • Daily bag limit: 24 geese, with a breakdown as follows:

    • White geese: Up to 20.
    • Dark geese: Up to 4.
  • Possession limit is three times the daily bag limit.

Balance of State Zone Ducks Oct 21 – Jan 31
  • Daily bag limit: 7 ducks, subject to the following composition:

    • Mallards: No more than 7, with only 2 being females.
    • Pintail: Limited to 1.
    • Canvasback: No more than 2.
    • Redheads: No more than 2.
    • Scaup: No more than 2.
  • Possession limit: Three times the daily bag limit.
