Farmer Hunting Regulations in New Jersey

Farmer License Exemption

  • Farmers and their immediate family residing on the farm can hunt, trap, and fish without licenses or a rifle permit.
  • Regulations, season dates, bag limits, and harvest reporting requirements apply.
  • Self-made tags are used for harvest reporting.


  • Farm: Qualifies under NJ Farmland Assessment Act of 1964.
  • Farmer Exemption: No license or rifle permit required for eligible farmers and immediate family.
  • Immediate Family: Includes close relatives of the farm owner or lessee who live on the farm.

Hunting Permits for Farmers

  • Farmers must have the appropriate permit for seasons requiring one.
  • Free permits for qualified farmers include Permit Bow, Muzzleloader, Shotgun, and spring/fall Turkey Permit seasons.
  • To facilitate access to permits, farmers must apply between June 1 and August 31.
  • Applications available online or at local county agricultural extension offices.

Farmer Deer and Turkey Permits

  • Claim deer permits from September 11, 2023, onward.
  • Eligible for one free antlerless permit per season and one free Antlered Buck Permit for each of the three permit seasons.
  • For turkey permits, claim fall season permits from September 11, 2023, and spring season permits from March 25, 2024.

Wildlife Damage Management Options for Farmers

  • Options include noise cannons and depredation permits for various wildlife causing farm damage.
