Coot Hunting Licensing and Survey Completion in Kentucky

Mandatory HIP Survey

Prior to hunting, all coot hunters are required to fill out the Harvest Information Program (HIP) survey. Access the survey through "My Profile" on the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources' website.

Licensing and Permits by Age Group

Hunters Younger than 12 Years

  • Licensing and Permit Requirement: Individuals under 12 are exempt from needing a license and permit for hunting coot.

Youth Hunters (Ages 12-15)

  • License Needed: An Annual Youth Hunting License is required, which is included in the Youth Sportsman's License.

Hunters Aged 16 and Older

  • Basic License: A choice between a Day (1 or 7-day) Hunting License or an Annual Hunting License is necessary.
  • Additional Permits: A Kentucky Migratory Bird/Waterfowl Permit and a Federal Duck Stamp are also required. These are included in the Resident Sportsman's License.

Senior Hunters (Ages 65 and Older) or Disabled Hunters

  • License Needed: Senior/Disabled License is required.
  • Federal Requirement: A Federal Duck Stamp must be obtained as well.

Season Dates for Coot Hunting

Past Season

  • Statewide Season Dates: November 23, 2023 - November 26, 2023.
  • Sex Restrictions: Harvesting is allowed for either sex.

Upcoming Season

  • Statewide Season Dates: December 7, 2023 - January 31, 2024.
  • Sex Restrictions: No sex-specific restrictions; either sex may be harvested.
