Fishing Regulations at MDWFP State Fishing Lakes

MDWFP operates 19 premier fishing lakes across Mississippi, offering anglers access to over 3,400 acres of stunning water bodies.

Fishing Permits and Licenses

  • Requirements: Sport fishing licenses and permits are mandatory for fishing on these lakes, except during the first weekend of National Fishing Week (June 1-2, 2024), when permits are free, and Mississippi residents are not required to have a sport fishing license.

  • Exempt Permits: Veterans and Active Service Members are exempt from lake permits, provided proof of status is presented.

Fishing Methods and Gear

  • Permitted Methods: Only rod and reel or pole fishing is allowed on State Fishing Lakes and State Park Lakes. However, carp, gar, buffalo, and bowfin may be taken by bow and arrow at night with a valid fishing and/or boating permit.

  • Gear Restrictions: No other gear is permitted for fishing on these lakes.

Fishing Locations and Times

  • Courtesy Piers: Fishing is prohibited from courtesy piers adjacent to boat ramps.

  • Night Fishing: Night fishing is permitted at all State Fishing Lakes (except Lake Bill Waller) from the bank or compliant boats, adhering to state and U.S. Coast Guard regulations.

Camping Information

  • Reservations: Camping reservations are not available at State Fishing Lakes. Contact the respective lake for camping availability.

  • Boat Launching/Fishing/Skiing (ages 16-61): $7.00
  • Boat Launching/Fishing/Skiing – Disabled or Age Exempt (ages 62 and older): $6.00

  • Fishing - Disabled or Age Exempt (ages 62 and older) – no boat launching: $3.00
  • Youth Fishing (under 16 years of age): Free
  • Camping (ages 16-61), at Calling Panther, and Neshoba:* $25.00

  • Boat Launching/Fishing/Skiing – Disabled or Age Exempt (ages 62 and older): $72.00
  • Fishing (ages 16-61) – no boat launching: $52.00
  • Fishing - Disabled or Age Exempt (ages 62 and older) – no boat launching: $32.00

Cabin Rental Permits

  • Cabin – weekday rate: $65.00
  • Cabin – weekend rate: $75.00

Note: Camping permits include fishing and boat launching for registered campers, not to exceed 8 people. Cabins without linens are available at Lake Claude Bennett, Prentiss Walker Lake, and Holmes County State Park Lake. Cabin rentals include fishing and boat launching for the number of registered cabin guests. Primitive camping permits do not include fishing and boat launching.

1. Calling Panther Lake

  • Size: 404 acres

  • Location: Copiah Co., 5 miles west of Crystal Springs just off New Zion Road.
  • Facilities/Activities: Offers 21 camping pads and 2 handicapped camping pads with electrical/water/sewer hookups. Features a boat ramp, handicapped fishing pier, handicapped restroom with showers, and a nature trail. Skiing is available on specific days.

2. Elvis Presley Lake* (Currently closed for renovation)

  • Size: 322 acres

  • Location: Lee Co., 2 miles northeast of Tupelo, just off Hwy 78 east.
  • Facilities/Activities: Provides a bicycle/walking trail, boat ramp, camping pads with water/electrical hookups, tent camping, handicapped fishing piers, grills, pavilion, picnic tables, and restrooms with showers. Skiing is available daily.

3. Holmes County State Park Lake* (Currently closed for renovation)

  • Size: Two Lakes: 45 acres and 16 acres

  • Location: Four miles south of Durant off I-55, exit 150
  • Facilities/Activities: Offers a boat ramp, camping pads with electrical/water hookups, bath house, handicapped fishing pier, pavilions, picnic tables, playground, and restrooms.

4. Lake Bill Waller

  • Size: 168 acres

  • Location: Marion Co., 12 miles southeast of Columbia on Marion Co. WMA.
  • Facilities/Activities: Features a boat ramp, handicapped fishing piers, earthen piers, and handicapped restrooms with showers.

5. Lake Bogue Homa

  • Size: 882 acres

  • Location: Jones Co., about 6 miles east of Laurel on Hwy 84.
  • Facilities/Activities: Provides a boat ramp, opportunities for duck hunting, handicapped fishing piers, pavilion, picnic tables, and restrooms with showers. Skiing is available daily from noon to sunset.

6. Lake Claude Bennett

  • Size: 71 acres

  • Location: Jasper Co., about 20 miles east of Bay Springs off Hwy 18.

7. Lake Columbia

  • Size: 84 acres

8. Lake Jeff Davis

  • Size: 100 acres

9. Lake Lamar Bruce

  • Size: 300 acres

10. Lake Mary Crawford

  • Size: 128 acres

11. Lake Mike Conner

12. Lake Monroe

  • Size: 103 acres

13. Lake Perry

14. Lake Tom Bailey

15. Neshoba County Lake

  • Size: 138 acres

16. Prentiss Walker Lake

  • Size: 81 acres

17. Simpson County Lake

  • Size: 76 acres

18. Tippah County Lake

  • Size: 145 acres

  • Location: Tippah Co., 2.5 miles north of Ripley on Hwy 15, west 2.5 miles.
  • Facilities/Activities: Features a boat ramp, camping pads with electrical/water hookups, handicapped fishing piers, earthen pier, grills, pavilion, picnic tables, and restrooms with showers. Skiing is available on specific days.

19. Lake Walthall

  • Size: 55 acres
  • Manager: None
  • Location: Walthall Co., 8 miles southeast of Tylertown off Hwy 48.
  • Facilities/Activities: Provides a boat ramp, but does not offer camping or skiing facilities.
