Enhancement Hunts in New Mexico

Overview

New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDGF) offers special hunting permits via auction or raffle tickets in partnership with wildlife conservation non-profits. The funds raised are dedicated to habitat enhancement, conservation, research, and management for each species. These special authorizations can be used by the recipient or given to others through sale, barter, or gift.

Enhancement Hunts to be Auctioned

Big Game Enhancement Packages

  • Includes: Five authorizations for deer, elk, ibex, oryx, and pronghorn.
  • Season Dates:
    • Deer and Elk: September 1, 2023 – January 31, 2024
    • Ibex and Oryx: April 1, 2023 – March 31, 2024 (WSMR access must be prearranged for oryx)
    • Pronghorn: August 1 – November 1, 2023

Bighorn Sheep Authorizations

  • Includes: One for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and one for desert bighorn sheep.
  • Season Dates: August 1 – December 31, 2023 (Except GMU 53 for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep closed August 16-31, 2023)

Specific Animal Authorizations

  • Fork-Antlered Deer: September 1, 2023 – January 31, 2024
  • Mature Bull Elk: September 1, 2023 – January 31, 2024
  • Bearded Gould’s Turkey: Any 30 consecutive days between April 1 and May 31 each year

The raffled hunts offer similar opportunities as the auctioned hunts, including:

Bighorn Sheep Authorizations

  • Rocky Mountain and Desert Bighorn Sheep: August 1 – December 31, 2023 (With GMU 53 specific dates for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep)

Specific Animal Authorizations

  • Fork-Antlered Deer: September 1, 2023 – January 31, 2024
  • Mature Bull Elk: September 1, 2023 – January 31, 2024
  • Bearded Gould’s Turkey: Choose any 30 consecutive days between April 1 and May 31 each year
