Honoring NMDGF Employees Austin Roberts and Ocie Gray

New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDGF) honors the memory of employees Austin Roberts and Ocie Gray, who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash while aiding wildlife. These premium hunts commemorate their dedication and service.

Austin Roberts

  • Background: A 14-year NMDGF veteran from Roswell, Roberts was a World War II bomber pilot before joining the department. He is remembered for his bravery, surviving numerous bombing runs and shoot-downs. Lake Roberts in the Gila National Forest is named in his honor.

Ocie Gray

  • Contributions: A NMDGF biologist and 1959 New Mexico State University graduate, Gray's legacy continues through a scholarship for biology students named after him.

Premium Hunt Details

Hunt Codes and Duration

  • Codes: DER-1-700 for deer and ELK-1-700 for elk.
  • Season: The hunts are available from September 1, 2023, to January 31, 2024.

Hunting Opportunities

  • Sporting Arms: Hunters may use any big-game sporting arm.
  • Location: The hunts are valid in any unit statewide, including NMDGF wildlife management areas and private lands, with the landowner's written permission.


  • Draw Process: These premium hunts are available through the draw and are subject to a quota.
  • Quota Note: Nonresident and outfitted applicants have an extremely low likelihood of drawing due to the quota restrictions.
