Waterfowl and Migratory Bird Hunting Zones in New York State: Boundary Descriptions

Western Zone

  • Boundary: Area west of a line extending from Lake Ontario east along the north shore of the Salmon River to Interstate Route 81, then south along Interstate Route 81 to the New York-Pennsylvania boundary.

Northeastern Zone

  • Boundary: North of a line from Lake Ontario east along the north shore of the Salmon River to Interstate 81, south on Interstate 81 to Route 31, east on Route 31 to Route 13, north on Route 13 to Route 49, east on Route 49 to Route 365, east on Route 365 to Route 28, east on Route 28 to Route 29, east on Route 29 to Route 22, north on Route 22 to Route 153, east on Route 153 to the New York-Vermont boundary. Excludes the Lake Champlain Zone.

Lake Champlain Zone

  • Boundary: East and north of a line along Route 9B from the New York-Canada boundary to Route 9, south on Route 9 to Route 22 near Keesville, south on Route 22 to the west shore of South Bay, following the shoreline of South Bay to Route 22 on the east shore, southeast on Route 22 to Route 4, northeast on Route 4 to the New York-Vermont boundary.

Southeastern Zone

  • Boundary: East of Interstate 81 and south of a line extending from Interstate 81 east on Route 31 to Route 13, north on Route 13 to Route 49, east on Route 49 to Route 365, east on Route 365 to Route 28, east on Route 28 to Route 29, east on Route 29 to Route 22, north on Route 22 to Route 153, east on Route 153 to the New York-Vermont boundary. Northwest of Interstate Route 95 in Westchester County.

Long Island Zone

  • Boundary: Includes Nassau and Suffolk counties and their tidal waters, plus the area of Westchester County and its tidal waters southeast of Interstate Route 95.

Special Sea Duck Area

  • Boundary: Coastal waters and all waters of rivers and streams in New York State seaward from the first upstream bridge.

These zones are specifically designated for waterfowl hunting, with each having its own unique geographical boundaries. Hunters should be aware of these boundaries to ensure they are hunting within the correct zone, adhering to the specific regulations and dates that apply to each area.

Woodcock

  • Area & Dates:
    • Upstate NY (1,3): Oct. 1 - Nov. 14
    • Long Island (2,3): Oct. 1 - Nov. 14
  • Bag Limit: 3 per day
  • Regulations: HIP Registration not required; Shooting hours from sunrise to sunset; Non-toxic shot not required; Federal Migratory Bird Stamp not required.

Crow

  • Area & Dates:
    • Upstate NY (1,3): Sept. 1 - Mar. 31
    • Long Island (2,3): Sept. 1 - Mar. 31
  • Bag Limit: None
  • Regulations: HIP Registration not required; Shooting hours from sunrise to sunset; Hunting on Fri., Sat., Sun., & Mon. only; Rifles and amplified calls permitted.

Snipe

  • Area & Dates:
    • Upstate NY (1,3): Sept. 1 - Nov. 9
    • Long Island (2,3): Closed
  • Bag Limit: 8 per day (Upstate NY only)
  • Regulations: HIP Registration required; Shooting hours 1/2-hr before sunrise to sunset; Non-toxic shot required.

Virginia & Sora Rails

  • Area & Dates:
    • Upstate NY (1,3): Sept. 1 - Nov. 9
    • Long Island (2,3): Closed
  • Bag Limit: 8 per day (Upstate NY only)
