Hunter Education Requirements and Options in South Carolina
Mandatory Hunter Education
Anyone born after June 30, 1979, must complete an approved hunter education course to obtain a hunting license in South Carolina. This requirement applies to both residents and nonresidents. Certifications from other U.S. states and Canadian provinces are accepted. For any queries about certification, contact the Hunter Education Office at 1-800-277-4301. Note, this certificate is not a substitute for a hunting license.
Course Options for Hunter Education
1. Classroom Course
SCDNR recommends an eight-hour instructor-led classroom course, free of charge. The course may be completed in one day or over two evenings. It covers hunting ethics, firearms safety, conservation principles, and wildlife management. A test at the end of the class is required to pass.
2. Online Course
For those preferring online education, Hunter-Ed.com offers an approved course for $19.50. After passing and paying the fee, a temporary South Carolina Hunter Education Certificate, valid for 30 days, is issued. The permanent certificate is mailed within 2-3 weeks.
Hunter-Ed.com provides daily customer service, including weekends, via email or a toll-free number. This is the only approved online hunter education course for South Carolina.
