Small game hunting encompasses various species, including:

Rabbit Boxes

  • Prohibition: Trapping rabbits is generally unlawful.
  • Exception: Landlords or tenants with exclusive control may use up to five rabbit boxes during the rabbit gun season.
  • License Requirement: A hunting license is necessary for using rabbit boxes.
  • WMA Lands: Rabbit boxes are not allowed on WMA lands (50-11-160).

Running Seasons (No Gun Season)

  • Restriction: When hunting rabbits, raccoons, opossums, squirrels, or fox without firearms, carrying any firearm is illegal.

Bird Dog Training

  • Year-Round Training: Bird dogs can be trained year-round on private land.
  • License Requirement: Trainers must possess a valid hunting license.
  • Closed Season for Quail: During the closed season for quail, trainers can only use firearms with blank ammunition.
  • Bird Dog Trainer’s License: Available for those training bird dogs for compensation.
  • Allowed Game: Pen-raised quail, chukars, and pheasant during the closed season.
  • Documentation Requirement: Applicants must provide documentation of the land areas used for training.

Field Trials

  • Permit Requirement: Conducting or participating in field trials necessitates a permit from SCDNR.
  • Application: Requests for field trial permits should be submitted at least 14 days before the proposed trial date.
  • Fee: $5 per trial.
  • Sanctioning: A charter or document indicating national recognition from a field trial organization is required.
